Our engineers now speak of ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: a machine sharper than its maker. Suppose it can out-argue the men examining it. Suppose its books contain proofs they cannot check. What, then, would count as evidence that it was safe?
David Lehr had neither the classified file nor a theory of intelligence. He had his brother's letters, a newspaper, and a telephone. The men with the file knew the road all along.
